Buying in Mauritania
Who is PROFUNDOR SARL?
A Mauritanian seafood sourcing company based in Nouadhibou and Nouakchott. We find the right product in approved plants, check it before loading and follow the export until your container leaves port.
Can I buy directly from a Mauritanian plant?
The goods come from the plant, but frozen seafood is exported through the SMCP, the state marketing company – and since 2025 fresh and live products as well. The SMCP signs the sales contract with you and receives the payment. We help you choose the plant and handle the process.
Which products can you supply?
Octopus, cuttlefish, squid, shrimp, lobster, crab and around 40 species of fish – all on the SMCP export list. Frozen, fresh or live, depending on species and season. See our species catalogue for grades and packing.
Do you also work with sellers?
Yes. Many traders and boat owners in Mauritania have their catch processed in an approved plant. We connect serious sellers with international buyers and help them meet the buyer’s specification.
Price, payment and contract
How is the price set?
The SMCP publishes reference prices (FOB) for each product and grade, valid for several weeks. Sales are made in offer rounds. We tell you the current reference price for your grade before you make an offer.
How do I pay?
For frozen exports, by an irrevocable, confirmed letter of credit at sight in favour of the SMCP, opened at a Mauritanian bank. Never pay an advance to a private account for frozen export goods.
What do your services cost?
Our fee depends on volume and services – per kilo or per container. The first supplier check is free for new buyers. After a short call about your needs we send you a clear offer.
Is there a minimum order?
Frozen goods are usually shipped by the reefer container (a 40′ container holds about 22–25 tonnes of octopus). Fresh fish by air can start with a trial shipment of a few hundred kilos.
Quality, sizes and seasons
How do you control quality?
We go into the plant during production and before loading: grade and size, glaze and net weight, packing and labels, cold-store and container temperature. You get a photo report the same day.
What do octopus sizes T1–T8 mean?
The weight of one piece, net without glaze – T1 is over 4 kg, T8 is 0.3–0.5 kg. Limits differ slightly between sellers, so always write the grade in grams in your contract.
When is octopus available?
Cephalopod fishing is closed twice a year, usually from about May to mid-July and from mid-October to mid-December. Dates are set each year by the authorities. Book before the reopening to be in the first production.
Can I get samples?
Yes. Before you commit we send photos, videos and specifications from the plant, and samples can be arranged depending on product and destination.
Shipping and documents
From which ports do you ship?
Frozen goods in reefer containers from Nouadhibou or Nouakchott. Fresh fish and live lobster by air, mainly from Nouakchott.
Which documents do I receive?
Sales contract (SMCP), commercial invoice, health certificate from ONISPA, certificate of origin, EU catch certificate for the EU, packing list and bill of lading.
Can you ship to Asia, the Gulf or the USA?
Yes. Each market needs plants approved for it – for example EU listing for Europe, SFDA approval for Saudi Arabia. We select plants approved for your destination.
