Round sardinella
Sardinella aurita
The backbone of West Africa's fish trade. Huge schools of round sardinella move along the Mauritanian shelf every year. Pelagic trawlers and purse seiners land them whole and freeze them in blocks. It is an affordable, high-protein fish in steady demand in Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and North Africa.

Horse mackerel
Trachurus trecae · T. trachurus
Firm, oily and good value. Cunene and Atlantic horse mackerel are caught offshore by pelagic trawlers and frozen whole, at sea or on land. Clean block-frozen cartons ship to West and Central Africa, Egypt and Eastern Europe.

Octopus
Octopus vulgaris
Mauritania's most valuable catch and the country's best-known seafood. Most of it comes from artisanal pot fishing, one octopus per pot, and is landed alive and frozen within hours. Seasonal biological closures protect the stock. Japan, Spain and Italy are the main markets.

Cuttlefish
Sepia officinalis
Caught together with octopus on the same shelf, by artisanal fishers and cephalopod trawlers. The meat is thick and white, and holds up well in the freezer. Sold whole or cleaned to Spain, Italy and Asian markets.

Senegalese sole
Solea senegalensis
A premium flatfish from the sandy inshore grounds. It is taken by small boats and sold fresh on ice to Europe by air, or frozen for longer supply chains. Graded by weight, from portion size to large fish for filleting.

Pink shrimp

The southern pink shrimp of the Mauritanian coast. Shrimp trawlers grade it by count and freeze it on board, so the colour and texture stay fresh. Spain and southern Europe are the traditional buyers.

Loligo vulgaris

Argyrosomus regius
Known locally as courbine. It is a large, firm white fish with seasonal runs along the northern coast. Caught by handline and nets, it is valued in Europe, North Africa and the Gulf, both fresh by air and frozen whole.

White grouper, called thiof in West Africa, is one of the most sought-after fish in the region. It is caught by handline over rocky ground and sold whole and gutted. It is sold fresh by air to Europe and the Middle East, or frozen.

Red porgy, called pargo in Spain, has a bright red skin and fine white flesh. It is caught mostly by line, which keeps the fish in good condition. It sells well in Spain, Italy and the Gulf, whole and gutted, fresh or frozen.
