Buying squid from Mauritania.
- Grades
- Squid is graded by mantle length: GG 36 cm and more, G 31–35, M 26–30, P 21–25 and 2P 16–20 cm. Write the length limits in your contract.
- Net weight & glaze
- You set the maximum glaze in your contract. Before loading we deglaze samples and weigh the net product, and we measure mantle lengths.
- Seasons
- Squid comes up with the cephalopod catch and closes at the same time: twice a year, about May to mid-July and mid-October to mid-December. The autumn 2026 closure starts on 10 October.
- How you buy
- Frozen squid is exported through the SMCP and paid by irrevocable, confirmed letter of credit at sight. The SMCP publishes FOB reference prices per grade – we tell you the current price for yours.
- Shipping & documents
- In 40′ reefer containers at −18 °C or colder. Sales contract (SMCP), health certificate (ONISPA), certificate of origin, EU catch certificate, packing list and bill of lading.
Why is squid graded by length and not by weight?
In the squid trade the mantle length is the usual measure. GG is the largest grade (36 cm and more), 2P the smallest common grade (16–20 cm).
Is this the same as flying squid (pota)?
No. This is European squid (Loligo vulgaris, calamar). Flying squid (Todarodes, pota) is a different species with its own page in our catalogue.
Is fresh squid available?
Yes, fresh on ice as well as frozen. Since 2025, fresh exports are also cleared through the SMCP – we plan the timing with you.
